American Cancer Society Volunteer Edgar Smith
A nationwide survey commissioned by the American Cancer Society found that while most Americans (83 percent) recognized the link of being overweight to heart disease and many (57 percent) know of the link to diabetes, far fewer (eight percent) understood there was a connection between being overweight and at risk for cancer. Being overweight is a risk factor for many forms of cancer, including breast cancer among post-menopausal women and colorectal cancer.
Of concern to many community officials and the medical profession in Wichita, Kansas, for the past two years, the community has been identified as one of the top 25 heaviest cities in the United States.
American Cancer Society Volunteer Edgar Smith knows the numbers. Smith is a Certified Personal Trainer and a Certified Fitness Instructor with over 16 years experience in the fitness industry. Recently, one of his goals has been to revamp his Fitness Boot Camp program slightly to accommodate heavier individuals entering his program who desire to get into better physical shape and take the pounds off.
Smith is becoming well-known in the Wichita area for his Fitness Bootcamp. “Fitness Bootcamp,” Smith said, “is a six-week program where participants join in workouts that take place in one of Wichita’s metro parks. The program is designed to increase strength, endurance, cardiovascular condition, self esteem and overall physical condition – all while having fun and creating new friends while creating a healthier and leaner body.”
Recently Smith has welcomed a number of heavier individuals into the program and has been able to integrate a modified workout for these individuals who continue to work out with the rest of the “leaner” group.
“With the right attitude, Bootcampers motivate each other,” Smith said. “No one’s ever left behind.”
With Smith’s commitment to fitness, eating right and, the continued growth of his Bootcamp program, there is an encouraging trend that Wichita may one day drop off the list of the top 25 heaviest cities in the United States. And perhaps this will contribute to a decreased incidence of cancer in the community.
